A powerful magnitude 6.2 earthquake hit Mindanao at 12:37 local time Friday afternoon, February 16, the website of Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

According to the PHIVOLCS, the quake, with a depth of 85 km, was monitored around 12:37 pm about 30 kilometers east of Sarangani Province.

Reports said residents said people rushed out of buildings in panic after the quake sent lighting fixtures swaying.

The government institute said it there has been no tsunami alert warning issued yesterday in the area.
